We don’t fast to change God; He can’t be changed.
We fast to change ourselves. There are many types of fasts but God’s purpose given in Isaiah 58 is very clear. In particular, verses 6 and 7 from the NIV ask us:
6) Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
7) Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
At In Christ New Hope Ministry, we have chosen to fast from wrong thinking and confession. This quarterly fast helps keep our mind fixed on things above us (see Colossians 3:1-3); it strengthens our ability to focus our thoughts toward God. We do occasionally fast from food as well, but it’s not what goes in a man that defiles himit’s what comes out of him (see Matthew 15:1-20). We all are familiar with the fact that death and life are in the power of the tongue (see Proverbs 18: 20-21) so exercising wisdom and discretion are very important disciplines to master. Join us in this mind-cleansing Fast From Wrong Thinking And Confession and then please comment on the way your life has changed!
Philippians 4:8 reads: Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
